Reading Chekhov

Anton Chekhov

A stage collection

Reading Chekhov is a theatrical declaration of love to Anton Pavlovich Chekhov — to his delicate irony, his keen observation of human nature, and his remarkable ability to find the comic in the most ordinary things.

In the first act, the audience encounters three Chekhov stories: A Work of Art, Boots, and The Night Before the Trial. These short pieces are full of recognizable characters, amusing situations, and that special Chekhovian smile behind which there is always a precise understanding of human nature.

In the second act, Chekhov’s famous one-act play The Bear is performed — a brilliant comedy about pride, stubbornness, loneliness, and an unexpected feeling that can burst in even where it is least expected.

Reading Chekhov is a performance about people who are funny, touching, awkward, and very much alive. Chekhov does not condemn them; he observes them closely — with a smile, sympathy, and gentle irony.
